 "[18] And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. [19] And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first".

 Message: 
  The altar in the old testament is a place where people worship God and offer their sacrifices. In the new testament, the altar is symbolic of the place of relationship with God, the place of prayer and the place of connection to God. People with relevant altars are people of relevant and enviable destinies.

 Everywhere Abraham, Isaac and Jacob went, they were always raising altars to God. These guys were not perfect in their days, they made mistakes but they remained connected and committed to the God of all the earth who was their source, sustainer, preserver and defender. God should have been, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Esau but Esau became profane. 

 Samson and Esau were two great men with outstanding potentials. From heaven, they had a privilege of greatness but they messed it up. You will never find a place in the Bible where Samson or Esau raised an altar to God. That was their undoing, that was a great mistake on their part. How is your altar? how is your prayer life? are you still in tune with God? 

The altar is the place God turns our mistakes to miracles. As terrible as Jacob was, he never joked with spiritual things or the things of God. After he woke up from his encounter while running away from his brother, he raised an altar unto God. Jacob was not perfect, he committed more atrocities than Esau but he remained connected to God. That was his saving grace.
